Learning to play a violin-family instrument is challenging. Holding the bow, proper posture, tuning the instrument, don’t collapse the wrist, keep your thumb bent, etc. Then…where do you put your fingers? There are no keys, no frets, no markings whatsoever to aid you in creating a map of where the notes are. As a result, most beginners do something to mark the basic positions for their fingers. Tape, dots, pencil, white-out – so many options!
I thought about position markers this week because I’m attempting to help a friend with a recording project by playing bass – NOT my primary instrument. I opted to use little blue dots to give myself a fighting chance of playing in tune.
